Understanding Liver Health
The liver performs hundreds of important functions every day. Understanding its role — and knowing when changes in your health deserve attention — is an important part of looking after your overall wellbeing.
What does the liver actually do?
Your liver is one of the body's largest internal organs and plays an important role in digestion, metabolism, energy storage and the processing of substances that enter the body.
It helps process nutrients absorbed from food, produces bile to support digestion, stores certain vitamins and minerals and helps process medications, alcohol and other substances.
Because the liver is involved in so many processes, maintaining overall health through balanced nutrition, movement, sleep and appropriate medical care is important.
Changes that may be worth discussing with a health professional.
Many symptoms can have numerous possible causes and cannot tell you by themselves whether something is wrong with your liver. However, persistent or unexplained changes in your health should not simply be ignored.
Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes is known as jaundice and should be medically assessed promptly.
Digestive changes
Ongoing nausea, abdominal discomfort or significant changes in digestion may have many causes and are worth discussing with a qualified health professional.
Persistent fatigue or feeling unwell
Fatigue is common and can have many possible causes. Persistent or unexplained fatigue deserves appropriate assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
Changes that don't resolve
New, unusual or persistent symptoms should be investigated appropriately, particularly if they are worsening or affecting everyday life.
A note from Temple
Symptoms shown in wellness graphics are not diagnostic of liver disease and may be caused by many different conditions. Jaundice, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, confusion or rapidly worsening symptoms require appropriate medical assessment.
Supporting your general health.
Rather than focusing on quick fixes or extreme cleanses, everyday habits can form part of a more sustainable approach to overall health and wellbeing.
Nourishing food
Aim for a varied eating pattern built around vegetables, fruit, whole foods and adequate nutrients.
Hydration
Regular fluid intake is an important part of supporting normal body function and general wellbeing.
Rest & movement
Consistent sleep and regular movement can support many aspects of physical and mental health.
Know when to ask for help
Professional guidance can be valuable when symptoms are persistent, complex or difficult to understand.
Health isn't one-size-fits-all.
There is an enormous amount of health information available online, but understanding what is relevant to your own circumstances can sometimes be the difficult part.
